iPhone iGo 1.4
![]()
iGo 1.4 the Go application for the iPhone has been updated again.
New features are:
- save SGF files
- load SGF files
- displays score
- show last move
The sample SGF files installed in /var/root/Media/iGoSGF are taken from the British Go Journal and send to us by Herman (thanks!).
Please report bugs and do post your firmware version here. Read the site before you mail us, we trust you donate.

A nice start, but I can’t figure out how to step through an .sgf file that I’ve loaded, which makes that feature pretty useless. Also, what’s the difference between (Load) and (Load..) and (Save) and (Save..) ?
Eventually it would be nice if there was a feature that made it actually possible to play on larger size boards. Right now the odds of getting a stone where you want it are pretty slim. One possible UI might be to zoom the board in around your finger when you touch, letting you slide your finger around with feedback while placing the stone, and then zooming back out when you lift your finger.
Looking forward to seeing where you go with this.
Wilhelm’s suggestion is a great one, perhaps with an iPhone-ish loupe. Another suggestion: add human to human play! Then I can play with my friends on the bus without carrying a box and many little stones. Thanks for the great work.
First of all: I’ve donated … ;)
Congrats to iGo 1.4, I like it very much and am looking forward to further improvements :D
Here some requests in this respect for the beginning:
- After having played a game - iGo showing “Game Over” in the bottom of the screen, with the game still being displayed, if you tap on settings one gets the warning, that the game will be reset … on the other side, if one starts a new game - no stones being placed so far - and taps the settings button, the above mentioned warning is not shown, which makes sense.
I would like to suggest that after a finshed game the warning is not displayed or as a possible alternative the option to save the game is given to the player - as a reminder, if at all for the action panel is still there ;)
- Actions’ buttons, which do not make sense in a specific situation should be disabled, to avoid any freezing of the application. Example: the undo button should not be tappable after a finished game, same with pass etc.
- If one has tapped the actions button and leaves the actions panel with the home button (at the bottom of the screen) to return to the SpringBoard instead of with one of the available actions, this has the same effect as if one would have tapped the donate button, i.e. Safari is loaded with the respective paypal page. This should not be the case.
I’ll report other findings as I find out about them ;)
Thanks again for the new version and for evaluating my suggestions/requests.
Cheers
Further to my first posting I do secon Wilhelm’s and Kevin’s requests! The really would be an awesome additions to iGo!!!
Cheers again
Next request: Pls be so kind to reactivate the notification of the opponenent (iGo for the time being ;) pass-wise, as it was with v1.3!
Currently you can only notice this fact, if you look at the top bar saying “You play black” …
TAL
Further remarks:
- taping the board after a finished game (Game Over) freezes the application, one has to hit the home button to get back to the SpringBoard.
- while playing a game (seen on the 7×7 board for now) the stones set on the right board side, i.e. on the so called 1st right line, are not marked - with the asterisk - as last move as on the rest of the board, which is annoying!
Cheers
Thanks for the fast feedback guys and I’m looking forward to the next release!
Again: Great App and keep up the excellent work!
’till next time ;)
Your app corrupted my iPod touch… I installed it and it crashed on the ‘Installing package’ fase. Several hours later the icon appeared on my Springboard and if you open it crashes also, I added the repository and tried to install again, it kept crashing as listed above, and even performed the manual installation in order to try and uninstall it and its still listed on Installer.app as available I cannot remove it…. any suggestions?
@Felipe:
I think it’s not iGo that crashed, it’s the installer crashing because it doesn’t have enough space on the Application partition.
Create a symlink to the /Application folder on a different partition with more space or remove some applications first.
Hi guys, I’ve got the following additional remark:
The Load & Save functionality is great, if one can’t finish the current started game or wants to resume it - this is something different from the Load/Save .. feature!
What I did notice is the fact that even if the game is finished (”Game Over” appears at the bottom of the screen) one can reload the previously saved partial game.
My understanding of this feature would be that the Save/Load buttons would be disabled in the Action panel, if the game has been finished. IMHO it doesn’t make sense to reload the interrupted game after having reached the game over status usability-wise.
Your feelings in this respect?
Cheers
