iPhone SDK - First impression and conclusions
Like many we have been waiting for the iPhone SDK.
We made a lot of iPhone applications until now, some released free on this site, most for third parties that plan to release the applications as soon as possible through the official Apple channel. As with every development process we need to be able to send compiled applications to the customers to test so they get the real user experience without the need to buy a Mac and install and buy a SDK. Apple can tell a lot on a presentation but we refuse to believe that the companies that did the two week development test as mentioned in the presentation used the simulator to develop the 3D OpenGL games. Maybe someone can tell how you can develop and test a console application that uses the accelerometer sensor and multitouch on a simulator with a single mouse pointer… or test how it plays in the bus, train, or on the toilet.
Oh.. one more thing…
We are not able to register to the developer program. It’s for US developers only! We are prepared to pay for the SDK, we just cannot buy it … it looks like the iPhone SDK team did a fabulous job on the technical side but maybe the business should rethink their strategy (again) … we also think Apple is doing a great job to make the device secure for average phone users but they should understand we, like many of you, want to be boss on our iPhone. Many people decided to trust us and installed the applications and even though many had troubles due to the different firmware versions and jailbreaks, we had tons of positive emails. We would like to improve the trust experience and signed applications and a SDK from a well know source would be great for this.
Again, we want to be boss (root) on the phone, being able to just quickly install an application on the iPhone without going through Apple. Until that is the case people will find solutions to work around the security and pre-patched firmware will be installed.
As we see it now, the community is urgently in a need of a new installer for the iPhone; fully open-source and preferably based on proved technology such as apt-get or yum. [EDIT] Saurik is doing a great job on this, we will soon support Cydia Packager!
We will try to port the games to the new SDK using the simulator and the Apple installer but others like the accelerometer logger are going to be hard to port.
Sad conclusion: we have to advise and incorporate RIM as a business solution.
Real sad conclusion: we have no more excuse to order the macbooks air …
Greetings from a country that supported Apple from the beginning but where you cannot buy an iPhone, and you cannot buy the SDK.
